About Jari Majaniemi
I own and write Helpot sienet. This page is here so you can judge my experience before you trust a mushroom guide.
I live in Turku, Finland, and I have a summer cottage in Ruovesi. Both places sit in good mushroom country, so I can follow species from spring through late autumn, year after year, in forests I know well.
I have been enthusiastic about mushrooms, foraging, and cooking since the 1980s. I am a home forager, not a professional mycologist. What I offer here is long practice in Finnish woods, a careful habit of identification, and a narrow set of species that I believe beginners can learn safely.
A full Finnish mushroom year
My season starts in spring with korvasieni (false morel, Gyromitra esculenta) KOR-va-sie-ni. It is highly poisonous unless it is processed and cooked properly. I mention it only as part of my own year in the forest. I do not teach korvasieni on this site, and you should not try it from a web page.
Through summer and autumn I pick the season’s mushrooms as they appear. The season ends in November, when the last suppilovahvero (funnel chanterelle) can still be picked, already frozen.
I also cook what I pick, and I enjoy less usual uses: three years ago I tried dyeing wool yarn with mushrooms. That was exciting. I have a dog of the Italian truffle breed Lagotto Romagnolo, and we have taken training for finding truffles.
Safety and editorial rules
I am very strict about which mushrooms I pick. The safe rule is paramount: only pick the ones you are sure about. If there is doubt, leave it in the forest.
Helpot sienet is written for total beginners, including people new to Finland who cannot yet read Finnish guides. My target is to present only species that do not have poisonous lookalikes, and to explain them in plain English with Finnish names.
Edibility advice on this site is limited to those beginner-safe species. Lookalikes I mention (for example bitter sappitatti next to herkkutatti) are there so you do not confuse them, not as an invitation to eat a wider range of boletes without local teaching.
Please treat this as a starting guide
No website can replace a local mushroom club, a teacher, or your own caution. Photos help, but they are not enough on their own. When you are unsure, do not pick, and do not eat.
